Copper Queens and Orlando Pride star striker Barbra Banda has made history by earning a nomination for the prestigious 2024 Women’s Ballon d’Or. Banda’s remarkable achievements on the field have secured her a spot in the top 30 shortlist, making her one of only two Africans nominated this year, alongside Malawi’s Tabitha Chawinga of Lyon.

This nomination marks a significant moment for African women’s football, as Banda and Chawinga become the second and third Africans ever to be recognized for this prestigious award, following Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala. Oshoala, who was the first African woman to make the shortlist in 2022, finished 16th in the rankings and paved the way for future talent.

The winner of the 2024 Women’s Ballon d’Or will be revealed during the awards gala on Monday, October 28.

Banda’s stellar performances this year have been key to Orlando Pride’s impressive unbeaten run in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). She also became the first player in NWSL history to score 10 goals in 10 matches, further cementing her reputation as one of the world’s top talents.

With her nomination, Banda continues to raise the flag for African football on the global stage. Fans across the continent will be eagerly awaiting the results as she vies for one of the most coveted awards in the sport.
